Aldie Stovepipe Academy
Aldie's First Public School c. 1875 · Renovated 2023–2024
The Stovepipe Academy is a Reconstruction-era schoolhouse in the historic village of Aldie, Virginia.
Constructed in the early 1870s with funds raised from local horse meets and steeplechases, it is a rare surviving example of Virginia's first generation of public schools.
The Name — Why "Stovepipe Academy"?
Early Virginia public schools were commonly called academies or even colleges. Aldie Stovepipe Academy and the neighboring Middleburg Stovepipe Academy were winkingly so-called because of the prominent stovepipes atop their roofs — a defining feature of such early rural schoolhouses — juxtaposing the humble with the aspirational in these nicknames.
